Gas Safety Week 2026: Take no Chances
We are proud to support the 16th annual Gas Safety Week 2026, taking place on from 14th to 20th September.
Gas safety is something no one should have to take chances with.
Coordinated by Gas Safe Register, the official list of engineers who are legally qualified to work on gas, Gas Safety Week helps people understand the simple steps they can take to stay safe at home.

This year’s theme is Take No Chances.
For customers, that means knowing what your landlord is responsible for, understanding what you can do yourself, and acting quickly if something does not feel right. A few simple checks can give you confidence that your home is safe and help protect everyone in it from risks such as gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.
Here are the key steps every customer can take:
Keep your gas safety appointment
Your annual gas safety check is an important safety measure. Please make every effort to keep your appointment or contact us as soon as possible if you need to rearrange. Regular inspections help ensure that gas appliances and installations provided by your landlord continue to operate safely.
Arrange checks for any gas appliances you own
If you own a gas appliance, Hundred Houses Society is not responsible for having it checked. To help keep it working safely, arrange for it to be safety-checked once a year and serviced regularly by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Check that the engineer is Gas Safe registered
We will only ever send a qualified Gas Safe registered engineer to work on gas appliances, pipework or flues. However, we encourage you to check this by asking to see the engineer’s Gas Safe ID card, visiting the Gas Safe Register website or calling 0800 408 5500.
Know the signs of carbon monoxide and test your alarms
Carbon monoxide, also known as CO, is highly poisonous and can be deadly. It has no smell, taste or colour, so an audible CO alarm is an important way to help keep your household safe.
At Hundred Houses Society, we are responsible for installing carbon monoxide alarms where required by law and ensuring they are in working order at the start of your tenancy. Test these alarms regularly and report any faults or concerns to us immediately.
It is also useful to recognise the main symptoms of CO poisoning: headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, collapse and loss of consciousness. If you suspect carbon monoxide is present, get fresh air immediately, call the gas emergency number on 0800 111 999, and seek medical attention if you feel unwell.
Act quickly if something does not seem right
Take no chances if you notice anything unusual. Warning signs can include lazy yellow or orange flames instead of clear blue flames, black or sooty marks on or around the appliance, a pilot light that keeps going out, too much condensation in a room, or error messages on the appliance’s control panel.
If you spot any of these signs, stop using the appliance and contact us immediately, or if you own the appliance, arrange for it to be checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Keep vents and flues clear
Vents and flues help gas appliances work safely. Keep them clear and avoid covering or blocking them, as this could stop appliances from ventilating properly.
