What can you do about my noisy neighbour?
The Society will only become involved if there is a serious, persistent problem. Most neighbours are tolerant of normal household noises and the occasional one off event such as drilling to carry out home repairs, a slamming door or a party. If your neighbour has disturbed you the best thing to do is to talk to them about it as soon as possible in a friendly, calm way and tell them why their noise upset you. Most neighbours will be very sorry and embarrassed that they had disturbed you and will offer reassurance that they try and control the noise levels and warn you in advance if there is a likelihood of noise for a particular reason.
If your neighbour doesn't respond positively to you or they continue to cause a disturbance after you have spoken to them, contact us. We will ask you to keep a diary of events, and will then speak to your neighbour about the incident(s). We may invite you both to attend a mediation to try and resolve your difficulties. We may also contact the local authority to carry out a noise check. If it is proven that the noise was deliberate and persistent, we could take legal action against your neighbour such as an injunction, or in very extreme cases they may be required to give up their home.
If you have any queries at all, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
