Housing waiting lists soar

30 Apr 2008

The number of housholds on the waiting list for social housing in Cambridgshire has risen by a massive 169% in some areas, reports the Cambridge Evening News.

In Cambridge there are 5,214 housholds waiting to for home up from 2,860 in 2002 while in the South Cambridgeshire region there are 4,661 on the list, a rise of 169% from the 1,733 in 2002.

Local MPs are blaming the Government for failing to tackle the problem. Cambridgeshire South East MP Jim Paice said,

"The Government has let the situation spiral out of control so that in just five years the number of families waiting for social housing in Cambridgeshire has increased by well over 50 per cent."
"Decent housing is a matter of social justice and we must look to new solutions to this crisis, such as the extension of right to buy, more innovative forms of house creation and the empowerment of local communities."
